Contra-indications to NIV

• Life threatening hypoxia
• Unconscious or low GCS (<8)
• Inability to protect the airway
• Un-drained pneumothorax
• Fixed obstruction of the upper airway
• Facial trauma or recent surgery
• Vomiting
• Non-compliant patient
